My Super Sweet 16 Presents: Exiled-Amanda

Written by: Rocky

The first former Sweet 16er to get Exiled was Amanda.

In Season 2(Eps 9) of My Super Sweet 16, Amanda had a Polynesian-themed sweet 16 party which included a performance by R&B sensation Ciara. Though Amanda’s parents spent more than $200,000 for her party, Amanda seemed to have little appreciation for what her parents did for her.

Six months after high school graduation, Amanda was still floating through life depending on her parents to make life great for her. So dad decided it was time for a change. She was ‘exiled’ to a Masai village on the Kenyan/Tanzanian border for one week.

After watching this episode, I honestly don’t think many watching this show would have acted any differently.

1. Amanda discovered that there were no bathrooms; the people do their business in the sand. I would have pitched a fit at that point. It’s the one thing I don’t accept when doing primitive camping. I always carry a little camp potty with lots of toilet paper. Sorry, but I just can’t handle the whole ‘find a bush’ idea.

2. The hut where Amanda would live was made out of cow dung. While I would have been respectful, I don’t think I would have slept well for fear of the hut collapsing. Not sure smothering under dried cow dung is the way I want to exit the world, but maybe that’s just me being spoiled.

3. Amanda had to walk 4 hours to a watering well, that’s one way. Like others, she had a small barrel of water strapped to her head for the 4 hour walk back to the village. I know physically fit people who would have found that trying and Amanda doesn’t seem like someone who has working out on her daily schedule. Also note that this was the hot African desert. Amanda cried when she had to take a ‘normal’ car to her b-day party because the a/c went out in the limo she was supposed to arrive in. Was it karma or just plain cruel to send her to a desert?!

4. Amanda was asked to help build a new hut … remember what it’s made out of … with her bare hands. While I might not have flat out refused like Amanda, I might have spent the time making weird faces and gagging. They kept watering it to make it squishy. EWW!

5. The tribe holds a ceremony for Amanda which involves killing and cutting up a goat she had been petting earlier that day. Like Amanda, I would have been visibly gagging, especially when members of the tribe drank the blood and ate a raw kidney. I’m willing to bet many were grossed out just watching it on tv.

The one thing I’d want for this show is that it be required viewing for all parents who spoil their kids. Once Amanda realized that she needed to accept the situation and make the most of it, she revealed her inner goodness. That’s what parents need to really get, spoiling your kids will not prepare them for the real world. It’s the challenges and hardships of life that build character. I’m not saying you have to travel to some third world country, but having to take some responsibilities for your life and the things you want can make a difference.

Amanda did very well on this trip. In fact, better than a lot of the teens where I live, who aren’t spoiled by rich parents. Of course, this could have just been the editing. We may have missed out on the embarrassing tantrums and whatnot.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.

My Super Sweet 16 Presents: Exiled

Written by: Rocky

There’s a new reality show on MTV called My Super Sweet 16 Presents: Exiled. This is a spinoff of My Super Sweet 16, which showcases self-indulgent brats who demand that their parents spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a sweet sixteen birthday party they hope will buy impress friends. And the parents who foolishly do it.

The premise for Exiled is to take eight spoiled young adults and drop them in the middle of nowhere to experience life in third world conditions; for one week. Yeah, one week. Their parents who will continue to spoil them, actually think this will teach them to value what they have and become better human beings. I suspect that deep down these parents don’t really think their kids need to change. They just want them to realize how awesome their parents are for being able to give them whatever they want.

Each episode will feature one teen from a past show of My Super Sweet 16. There are a total of seven females and one male.

Pros: The teens, as well as teen viewers, will have an eye opening look at life in third world countries. I’m hoping that some will be inspired to do something productive with their lives that will contribute to a change in the world.

Cons: The way the show is promoted. Its aim is to appeal to self-absorbed people who enjoy seeing other, more fortunate, self-absorbed people get their comeuppance.

Watching My Super Sweet 16 can give us a glimpse of “the good life.” Amidst the demanding divas and epic meltdowns that lead up to insanely over-the-top teenage birthday bashes, we get a look at the posh lives of wealthy families. And while we take that often envious look at how the other half lives, how many of us sit there wishing that these spoiled teens could be slapped with a serious dose of reality?

Hippie Beekeeper Couple Almost Didn’t Make It On Amazing Race 13

Written by: John

There’s a really interesting article talking with the hippie looking beekeepers who just finished running the Amazing Race. It seems like almost every running of the Amazing Race has to have their token “hippies” and TAR 13 is no different. I guess the big difference here is that these hippies have probably been hippies since the 70s.

This is an absolutely unique couple which looks like they’ll be really entertaining to watch. However, they almost didn’t get to go on the Amazing Race. The producers really wanted them, but had concern over there health. Here’s an excerpt from a story about Anita and Arthur Jones:

So how did these two find fame on a reality show?

The avid “Amazing Race” fans say it started with a video tape.

“The production assistant called and said ‘We can’t get your video off our minds. We just keep talking about it, but we really don’t think you can do it,’ ” explains Arthur.

So why not?

“Well, because most folks on the show are like 22 years old, and we’re kind of older,” laughs Anita.

So to prove themselves, the active duo made another video tape skiing in a downpour.
Their lifestyle didn’t hurt, either.

“I don’t know if they wanted the hippie thing,” Anita says. “I mean this is just our lifestyle. This is who we are, and they saw our video and they’re kind of going OK.”

Then, the couple also made some comments (although limited since the show hasn’t aired) about their experience running TAR 13.

“It’s like you’re in a twilight zone,” Anita says. “You’re just floating through as fast as you can, it’s just so amazing.”

“I think a lesson is that it’s not that dangerous out there,” Arthur says. “People sort of have this, well, you can’t go into these countries. Certainly there are war areas, but by and large people are helpful. You stop people on the street and ask for directions, people are more than willing to help.”

“You are under so much pressure and adrenaline that sometimes you say stuff you didn’t mean,” Arthur says, “but it’s just because you’re focused. Eventually, you have to come out of it with some forgiveness and understanding that we’re all human and make mistakes.”

Nah really? I can’t remember a single episode of TAR where someone said something they shouldn’t have said to the partner. Ok, most episodes include some sort of snide remark. However, the hippies are usually the exception. That might be a first for the Amazing Race: hippies saying something rude.

Of course, this is why I could never go on the Amazing Race with my wife. However, my brother and I would absolutely LOVE to go. I wonder if they’d let me live blog my experience on the Amazing Race. Now wouldn’t that be cool? Then, they could post my blog comments at the same time as the show is shown on TV.
