London Olympics 2012: Michael Phelps a Look Back

Several weeks ago on my personal blog, I broke down the times in every individual event that Michael Phelps has participated in each of the Olympics that he has been a part of… now that he is getting close to completing his time in London, here is an update of the table from my original post:

YEAR PRELIM SEMIS FINALS PLACING
MENS 200 METER FREESTYLE
2004 Athens 1:48.43 (Q) 1:47.08 (Q) 1:45.32 Bronze
2008 Beijing 1:46.48 (Q) 1:46.28 (Q) 1:42.96 Gold
MENS 100 METER BUTTERFLY
2004 Athens 52.35 (Q) 51.61 (Q) 51.25 Gold
2008 Beijing 50.87 (Q) 50.97 (Q) 50.58 Gold
2012 London 51.72 (Q) 50.86 (Q) 51.21 Gold
MENS 200 METER BUTTERFLY
2000 Sydney 1:57.30 (Q) 1:57.00 (Q) 1:56.50 5th
2004 Athens 1:57.36 (Q) 1:55.65 (Q) 1:54.04 Gold
2008 Beijing 1:53.70 (Q) 1:53.70 (Q) 1:52.03 Gold
2012 London 1:55.53 (Q) 1:54.53 (Q) 1:53.01 Silver
MENS 200 METER INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
2004 Athens 1:57.14 (Q) 1:58.52 (Q) 2:00.01 Gold
2008 Beijing 1:58.65 (Q) 1:57.70 (Q) 1:54.23 Gold
2012 London 1:58.24 (Q) 1:57.11 (Q) 1:54.27 Gold
MENS 400 METER INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
2004 Athens 4:13.29 (Q) 4:08.26 Gold
2008 Beijing 4:07.82 (Q) 4:03.84 Gold
2012 London 4:13.33 (Q) 4:09.28 4th

A quick glance at the times above throughout the Olympics that Michael has participated in thus far it would appear that although his lowest times were in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, for the most part he has been consistent thereafter.

As of this writing he has the following individual medals:
Gold: 10
Silver: 1
Bronze: 1

Keep in mind that I did not count any medals he has earned with others in the various relay events, although he has earned quite a few in those individual events as well.

Twice he has won a particular event in three consecutive Olympics… now the question remains: Will he come back for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Give it a few years and we’ll know our answer.

Stars Earn Stripes: NEW Celebrity Reality Show on NBC

While watching the Olympics, they were advertising a new reality competition show for celebrities: Stars Earn Stripes. According to the official NBC website:

Hosted by General Wesley Clark (retired) and Samantha Harris, “Stars Earn Stripes” is an action-packed competition show that pays homage to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and our first-responder services. The star-studded cast includes four-time undefeated world boxing champion Laila Ali, actor Dean Cain (“Out of Time,” Five Days of War”), actor and former National Football League player Terry Crews (“The Expendables 2,” “The Newsroom”), multi-platinum recording artist, actor, producer and television personality Nick Lachey (NBC’s “The Sing-Off”), Alaska businessman and four-time Iron Dog snowmobile race champion Todd Palin, NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” trainer Dolvett Quince, Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, and WWE diva, Eve Torres.

In this fast-paced competition, the eight celebrities will gather at a remote training facility where they will be challenged to execute complicated missions inspired by real military exercises. From helicopter drops into water to long-range weapons fire, the contestants will be tested physically, mentally and emotionally. Each will be paired with a special operative from a military branch or one of our first-responder forces, including former U.S. Army Delta Force and Green Berets, U.S. Navy SEALS, U.S. Marines and police officers, who train alongside their partners and compete in the missions with them. Each of the teams is competing for a cash prize on behalf of a military, veterans or first-responder charity.

Committed to hiring recent vets on the crew, “Stars Earn Stripes” hopes to inspire other employers throughout the country to make similar commitments to our returning heroes to show audiences just how incredible these heroes’ missions really are. Dick Wolf (“Law & Order,” NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU”), Mark Burnett (NBC’s “The Voice,” “Survivor”) and David A. Hurwitz (“Fear Factor”) serve as executive producers. The series is a production of Universal Television, One Three Media, Wolf Reality, LLC and Bill’s Market & Television Productions.

What I find to be rather interesting is that there are two Dancing with the Stars veterans and one other whose brother will be on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars: Samantha Harris (ex-host), Laila Ali (Season 3 contestant), Nick Lachey (Season 2’s Drew Lachey’s brother). Or they were or are involved with other NBC competition shows: Dolvett Quince (trainer of The Biggest Loser) and Nick Lachey (ex-host of Sing-off).

It would also appear that the contestants involved are those known to work out heavily and / or have partaken in sports in general. I am intrigued enough to give the premiere a courtesy look if I have time… but beyond that we’ll see.

London Olympics 2012: United States’ Alexandra Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas in the Individual All-Around Results

Yesterday I posted a preview of the Women’s All-Around Competition… more specifically I focused on the two athletes that would be representing the United States in the All-Around: Alexandra Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas.

As a quick reminder here are the qualification scores in comparison to the Team Final scores on the apparatus that the two gymnasts were asked to participate on:

NAME FE V UB BB

Qualifications 13.766 15.900 15.333 15.266
Team Final 15.066 15.966 15.200 15.233

London Olympics 2012: United States’ Alexandra Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas in the Individual All-Around Preview

Much like how I laid it out yesterday for the Mens Gymnastics Individual All-Around… today I will focus on the two United States Womens Gymnastics qualifiers: Alexandra Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas.

Looking back at the Qualification Round, the United States women were strongest with having three of the five gymnast squad in the top five: Alexandra Raisman (2nd overall), Gabrielle Douglas (3rd overall), and Jordyn Wieber (4th overall). Since only the top two from each country is allowed in the individual gymnastics events the only ones we’ll follow are Alexandra and Gabrielle.

Before we find out how they did, let’s look at the scores they have received for the various apparatus in the Qualifying and Team Finals thus far. The following includes their Qualification scores, Team Final scores and the point differences between the two if applicable:

NAME FE V UB BB
GABRIELLE DOUGLAS
Qualifications 13.766 15.900 15.333 15.266
Team Final 15.066 15.966 15.200 15.233
Point Differential +1.300 +0.066 -0.133 -0.033
ALEXANDRA RAISMAN
Qualifications 15.325 15.800 14.166 15.100
Team Final 15.300 14.933
Point Differential -0.025 N/A N/A -0.167

Gabrielle was used on all four apparatus and she had increased her score between the Qualifications and the Team Final, whileas Alexandra was only used on two of the four apparatus and her scores dipped (though for the Floor Exercise that was questionable since she did alter a little of her routine due to the United States needing at least a 10.000 score to capture gold).

Stay tuned for tomorrow where I will post the individual scores for both Alexandra and Gabrielle as they happen live and include the final placements as they become official!

London Olympics 2012: United States’ Danell Leyva and John Orozco in the Individual All-Around

Today Danell Leyva and John Orozco competed in the All-Around over in London.

If you remember from the Qualification Round, the United States men did rather well individually with Danell Leyva qualifying in first while John Orozco was fourth overall.

Before we find out how they did in the individual All-Around, let’s look at the scores they have received for the various apparatus in the Qualifying and Team Finals thus far. The following includes their Qualification scores, Team Final scores and the point differences between the two if applicable:

EVENT FE PH SR V PB HB
DANELL LEYVA
Olympic Qualifications 15.100 14.866 14.600 15.500 15.333 15.866
Team Finals 15.200 13.400 15.366 15.866
Point Differential +0.100 -1.466 N/A N/A +0.033 0.000
JOHN OROZCO
Olympic Qualifications 15.166 14.766 15.066 15.800 14.533 15.266
Team Finals 12.733 14.958 14.600 15.133 15.333
Point Differential N/A -2.033 -0.108 -1.200 +0.600 -0.067

Between the Qualification Round and the Team Final both men seemed to have faltered quite a bit, thus why they weren’t able to land themselves onto the podium. Beyond the break I’ll compare their individual Qualification scores with their scores from the All-Around today as well as the point differential so we could see how they have progressed or regressed where applicable.

London Olympics 2012: United States Womens Gymnastics Olympic Team Final Results

Much like I laid out the United States Mens Gymnastics Olympic Team Final Results yesterday I will do the same for the Women.

First I will just show who I had predicted to be up for each of the various apparatus then I will show who ultimately was selected for Team USA for the Floor Exercise, Vault, Balance Beam and Uneven Bars.

Then after the break… to keep for giving out spoilers… I will provide the Qualification Round scores for each of the gymnasts that participated on the apparatus, then there will be another table with their Team Final score and finally I will show the point differentiation between that of the Qualification Round and the Team Finals to see if there was any major difference between the two scores.

At the end of the post you will see the final placements for the eight teams that made it to the London 2012 Womens Gymnastics Olympic Team Final.

So to start let’s look at where I believe the female gymnasts are going to be representing the United States on the various apparatuses versus what actually happened:

NAME FE V UB BB
US WOMENS GYMNASTICS OLYMPIC TEAM FINAL PREDICTED BREAKDOWN
Gabrielle Douglas X X X ??
Jordyn Wieber X X X ??
Alexandra Raisman X X
Kyla Ross X X
McKayla Maroney X
US WOMENS GYMNASTICS OLYMPIC TEAM FINAL ACTUAL BREAKDOWN
Gabrielle Douglas X X X X
Jordyn Wieber X X X
Alexandra Raisman X X
Kyla Ross X X
McKayla Maroney X

Mckayla Maroney’s specialty is the Vault, so it is to be expected that would be the only apparatus that she would be required to partake in.

As for figuring out who between Gabrielle Douglas and Jordyn Wieber would be expected to participate on all four apparatus? Well… considering we know that Jordyn is expected to partake on three of the four apparatus then that just leaves Gabrielle.

London Olympics 2012: United States Mens Gymnastics Olympic Team Final Results

Over at London the Mens Team Finals were underway… So how did the United States do? Well, let’s take a look back at who we could expect to see performing what during the Team Final.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I had predicted how the apparatus breakdown was going to happen… if you have forgotten here is the table:

US MENS GYMNASTICS OLYMPIC TEAM FINAL PREDICTED BREAKDOWN

NAME FE PH SR V PB HB
Danell Leyva X X X
John Orozco X X X X X X
Jonathan Horton X X
Jake Dalton X X X
Sam Mikulak X X X X

This is how the actual breakdown of the Team Finals happened today:

NAME FE PH SR V PB HB
Danell Leyva X X X X
John Orozco X X X X X
Jonathan Horton X X
Jake Dalton X X X
Sam Mikulak X X X X

So I was right in that the US Mens Team would choose to give John Orozco a breather… at the beginning. That I didn’t expect… in the end it is all about how the United States fared in the Team Final… So how did they fare? Well let’s take a look at the scores after the break…

NOTE ON THE FINAL TEAM RESULTS: If you want to find out the team placements go to the bottom of the post after the break…

London Olympics 2012: US Gymnastics Olympic Team 2012 (Qualification Round)

UPDATE!!!: Posts have been added with the scores and results of the United States Mens Gymnastics Team and the United States Womens Gymnastics Team

After a month of waiting, prepping and practicing the Mens and Womens US Gymnastics Teams took to the floor over the weekend and expected hit the top of the leaderboard in the Team competition.

In the Olympics for the Qualification round, four to five gymnasts are expected to compete on the various apparatus and the four top scores will count towards the final team score. These scores on the various apparatus also determine who will compete in the various individual events.

After the Qualification Round, the scores will be erased and for the team competition, each team will only be able to post up three gymnasts per apparatus and all three scores will count. So as one can see the stakes are rather high.

What I am going to do for both the Mens and Womens Team is compare how the gymnasts fared during the Olympic Trials a month ago and how they fared during the Qualification Round in the Olympics.

A true lover of TV. Not everything about TV, but great TV. Not afraid to say what he thinks and be proven wrong when someone knows something more than he does. My favorite TV show is definitely Amazing Race. However, it's not my favorite TV show to blog about.
