The First Weekend in College Football

Written by:

Hey there everyone well the first weekend of college football wrapped up last night with a heck of game between UCLA and Tennessee which ended with the UCLA Bruins upsetting the Volunteers in overtime 27-24.
So what did we learn this weekend? Well we learned that Missouri has picked up right where they left of last season, USC also hasn’t lost a step and looks as dominate as ever, the Pac-10 is going to be a much better confrence than people ever give it credit for, Alabama proved they have talent and that Clemson was overrated, Michigan got off to a rough start in the Rich Rodriguez era but there was some sign of improvment, Ohio State is in trouble if Beanie Wells can’t recover and lastly if the first week is any indication of what the rest of the season will be like you can expect upsets on the regular.
This last weekend there were three upsets in the top 25 by unranked opponents Bowling Green, East Carolina and UCLA were all the big winners over the weekend. While Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, and Clemson all got reality checked pretty tough. However with this being only the first weekend i cant wait for the rest of the season like i said earlier if this weekend was any indication of what is to come then we are in for one wild season.

I will finish this with my play of the week and it’s the blocked punt that sealed the East Carolina victory over Virgina Tech

BCS Football Behemoth (The SEC) Signs 15 Year $2 Billion Deal with ESPN

Written by:

Everyone knows that the SEC is by far the best football conference top to bottom in the nation. It’s the deepest conference and anyone that questions it is an idiot.

Well, today I think they just got a little deeper. $2 billion deeper. ESPN is coughing up a reported $2 billion for a 15 year contract for the SEC football and basketball games.

“This agreement makes the SEC the most widely distributed conference in the country,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. He declined to disclose financial terms.

“The bottom line here is that fans of SEC football will have more access to games and better distribution than they ever have in the past,” Slive added.

The deal begins with the 2009-10 season and ends the league’s look into starting a network to carry its sporting events.

ESPN will have rights to every SEC home football game not on the network package and all league matchups will be shown on some outlet, including at least 20 a year on ESPN or ESPN2. That includes two primetime Thursday night matchups and Saturday night games.

“We’re thrilled with the historic nature of this deal,” ESPN executive vice president John Skipper said, adding that college sports have been “part of our DNA” for nearly 30 years. “It’s not hard to figure why we’d want to be involved with it, given the quality of SEC sports, for 15 more years.”/blockquote>

Looks like the playing field of college football won’t be leveling off anytime soon. Good thing that more money offers diminishing returns after you reach a certain level.

Reality TV Meets Sports

Written by:

In something we should have seen coming for a long time, a company out of California is working on a new reality TV show called “America’s Next Sports Star.” We should have seen a reality show with sports coming. I’m actually surprised it wasn’t done sooner.

Here’s a description of the show:

In this sports reality show, amateur male contestants compete in a basketball competition to determine the nation’s best athletes.

“AMERICA’S NEXT SPORTS STAR” is a celebration of the American dream that captures the competitive spirit.

Each athlete will have 30 seconds to demonstrate their ability in a variety of skills in this weekly show. This isn’t some teenager singing another person’s hit tune.

This is a lively, fast-paced, action filled program that draws upon the tone and excitement from the grandfather of all reality genres—the sports world.

Hundreds of unknown athletes from all over the country will descend into Las Vegas, Nevada for a shot at the big time. National auditions will be held to seek out the best amateur male athletes in basketball.

Could be really interesting or really lame. My guess is that most of these ballers have pretty interesting stories. The challenge might be getting them to articulate their story.

Unfortunately, no big sports stars names are listed, nor any major networks, nor even the hosts for the show. Not a promising sign for the show. We’ll keep our eye on this show and see what happens to it.

Where’s Michael Phelps’ Father?

Written by:

I know I always wondered the above question. Michael Phelps was media darling, Michael’s father was no where in sight. Well, today I came across an article that solved the mystery:

It’s been well-documented that Debbie and Fred Phelps divorced when Michael was 9.

Fred Phelps is a retired Maryland State Trooper, lives in a suburb of Baltimore and has remarried since divorcing Debbie Phelps in 1993. According to the Baltimore Sun, he watched the Olympics from his home, saying he was “on pins and needles” every time Michael dove into the pool. But, the New York Post reported that Fred has yet to call his son to congratulate him on his Olympic accomplishments.

Following the divorce, Fred Phelps had little contact with his son. Prior to the 2004 Olympics, Michael told a reporter that his father hadn’t even called to congratulate him when he set his first world record. However, the two reconciled prior to the Athens Games and Fred even made the trip to watch his son win six golds and two bronzes. Since then, however, the relationship has reportedly fractured.

It’s too bad that their relationship has soured. I do give the man credit for not making a big deal out of it. Although, if he was in the wrong, then he’d have good reason not to expose himself.

One thing I do give the man credit for: Michael Phelps’ dad has great genes.

Olympics

Written by:

Hey everyone my name is Travis and i will be the writer here on pure tv sports. Sports is probably the most watched thing on televison overall so its fitting that we have plenty to talk about.
Soo lets start with the obvious and easy things..the Olympics.. and well for the most part all you can say about Michael Phelps is DAMNNNN the man is possesed and we dont need to get into that because we all know it.. but damn.. also the Redeem Team is looking great winning games by an average of over 30 points, there was a ton of uncertainty about USA basketball after the past 8 years with no international championships but once again the americans look poised to dominate the games and bring home a huge gold that basketball fans in america needed. Next i took a look over at track and field and the one and only Usain Boldt. For everyone who got a chance to see this guy do his thing in the 200 and 100 you cant help but be taken back at watching a human being move that fast without wheels. As far as the americans are concerned in track and field … they have been overall doing fairly well with medal sweep in the mens 400 and also with medals in the womens and mens hurdels. As Far as non Phelps aquatics are concerned the Chinese have dominated the diving which seems natural the American womens waterpolo team has looked very good and the mens waterpolo team has also looked strong showing a 4-1 record. Next we go to volleyball where the American sand volleyball team of Rogers and Daulhausser are in the Gold Medal Game against Brazil while the womens sand team looks just as good and is also getting ready to play in the gold medal game, while the men and womens indoor teams have both advanced out of pool play and each have won their first quarterfinal matches. Overall so far America is leading the medal count by four but are trailing the gold medal count by 19 to China who has 45 golds… this gap should narrow here in the next couple weeks with the strongest american sports closing out. well i will close this out with a clip of the week , this has been my favorite moment of the olympics so far with two great NBA superstars hooking up to make an awesome play.

The Beijing Olympics in Legos

Written by:

There is something cool and unique about anything that is replicated in Legos. Some crazy people enthusiasts from Hong Kong recreated the Beijing Olympic venues in Legos. While I think that it’s insane the detail that these people went to, I’m also quite struck by it. I just can’t imagine ever having enough time to really do something like this. Take a look for yourself and tell us what you think.

Michael Phelps Wins 100m Fly for Gold No. 7

Written by:

As Rocky mentioned in my previous post, Michael Phelps could have possibly offered a more exciting moment at the Olympic games. You can watch the video on NBC

I would still possibly argue that the other is more exciting, because Jason Lezak wasn’t the famous Michael Phelps. Plus, the way he came back on the swimmer was unbelievable. Michael Phelps was suppose to come back at the end and finish well. It was just a question of whether he could come all the way back or not.

I will say that Phelps 100m Fly win was the closest race I’ve ever seen and one where you thought that he’d lost until you saw the flags come out showing that he won. Plus, his mom and coach’s reactions are priceless.

The Olympics is quite possibly some of the best Sports TV of all.

Most Exciting Moment in the Beijing Olympics…So Far

Written by:

The closest finish in olympic history. Probably the most exciting swimming can ever get. Jason Lezak at 25 meters looks like he didn’t have a chance at all. Then, some miracle happened. It’s impossible that he was able to make it back. Absolutely the most incredible moment in the Beijing Olympics up until now.

Enjoy the video of Jason Lezak finishing the 4 x 100 swimming relay.
