NBC’s The Voice Season 5 – Blind Auditions: Premiere

So Marianya here… Below are my impressions of the contestants that have been picked up by various coaches as well as my thoughts on the coach / contestant connection.

Unfortunately since I am already busy on Monday nights, my thoughts / impressions will not be posted until the day after. So bare with me. 🙂

“I’ve Got the Music in Me”
by The Kiki Dee Band

Contestant Impressions: She has that strong raspy voice that would work well with the rock genre. And in some ways stronger than Juliet Simms from Season 2.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Since there is no strong rock-related coaches in the chairs that turned she really could learn anything from the three. Choosing Cee Lo was a wise, but not surprising move, however, I would like to see her go with Blake.

Contestant Impressions: Younger contestants don’t really impress me as much as some of the older ones. Yes there are many that have a lot of natural talent and impeccable tone quality, however, to me give any of them a couple more years and they would be even better. I feel the same way about Caroline.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Blake has the stronger track record when it comes to coaching the youth, but Cee Lo is a respectable choice. At the same time, I think Cee Lo will push her in ways that Blake might not be able too. So despite my reluctance, Cee Lo was probably the more appropriate choice.

“You Are So Beautiful”
made popular by Joe Cocker

Contestant Impressions: Mature, strong, power voice… and moving. The problem is that as much as I respect her voice and am glad she is part of the competition now I am not convinced of her longetivity.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Between Adam and Christina, the latter would have been too similar while Adam would actually push her in ways that Christina might not be able to. AKA good choice.

Contestant Impressions: This is a strong bluesy kind of performance that I haven’t really heard all that often. Only thing wrong… there wasn’t enough of it.
Contestant / Coach Combo: He really could have gone either way when it came to his coach. I think Blake it a better fit, but CeeLo would have been interesting.

“Landslide” is a song written by Stevie Nicks and performed by British-American music group Fleetwood Mac

Contestant Impressions: As much as I like her voice and the tone, etc… This isn’t someone that I generally remember, meaning I have to rewatch her performance to remember what I was thinking about her. It will be interesting to see what she sings down the road.
Contestant / Coach Combo: The obvious choice here is Christina, and honestly as much as Blake would have worked… Christina just works better.

“Mercy” performed by Duffy

Contestant Impressions: For someone so young, she really knocked this out of the park. There is something I like about her voice, except there are similarities to current / past artists so she doesn’t really stand out that much.
Contestant / Coach Combo: This is a combo in heavy (well considering the choices). Christina could work, but CeeLo is just that much better at the moment.

“Sure Be Cool If You Did” recorded by Blake Shelton

Contestant Impressions: Seriously? A Blake Shelton song? There is something about his I like, don’t know what though. He has a bit of a grit and a growl that he plays with.
Contestant / Coach Combo: I am really happy with this combo, Adam will do really well with Justin. Particularly since Adam has always wanted to work with a country artist.

“Girl on Fire” recorded by Alicia Keys

Contestant Impressions: For someone so young she has a lot of power in her voice. What I would love to hear is more depth to it, though she is strong in the technicalities.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Christina and Timyra-Joi are far too similar in vocal styles that I am not sure if it is a good fit. However, considering her youth this is probably the best choice since it would allow Christina to help her develop into a more mature voice as opposed to the other coaches where the differing styles could have a negative impact on her vocally.

“The Thrill Is Gone” is a major hit for B.B. King

Contestant Impressions: I really love her deeper, lower range, not to mention her falsetto. OMG. And most people that sing the lower range have to work for it, but she didn’t have to, it was just there.
Contestant / Coach Combo: That being said, she really couldn’t go wrong with any of the three coaches, well more either Adam or Blake over CeeLo but not by much. This will be interesting to see it develops.

Contestant Impressions: Upbeat… he sounded like he was having a ball on stage. However, for some reason he became forgettable over time for me.

Contestant Impressions: This is what I was waiting for all night! Something unique, smooth, and that caught my attention and kept it.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Adam is the perfect coach for him, CeeLo is unique but I don’t think he could really do for him that Adam could do for him. Blake could push him, but I don’t think he could push him the way that Adam would. Overall, it is all about Adam here.

“It’s a Beautiful Day” is a song by Michael Bublé

Contestant Impressions: You can really feel this guy just grooving with the music. He felt really comfortable and in the pocket throughout the song. He definitely has the style and feel of Michael Buble, however, his voice is deeper and in a lower register (which I prefer).
Contestant / Coach Combo: Honestly with Blake being friends with Michael Buble is a huge advantage because Sam is not only going to get pushed and stretched by Blake, but it is with the knowledge and stylizations that Buble could aid Blake with. Sam wins in this match up.

Contestant Impressions: Wow, this one can sing. I love the power and subtlety in her vocals and what she brings to the table. This is someone I am looking forward to down the road.
Contestant / Coach Combo: What is it with Adam winning these four chair turns this night? I mean seriously. Then again, this has a feeling of chocolate and vanilla which can be good or bad. What I mean is that their styles don’t mesh on paper but they work well together. So I am expecting good things to happen here.

Interview with Liddup from ABC’s Shark Tank

One of my favorite shows on TV is ABC’s Shark Tank. As an entrepreneur myself, I’m always fascinated with the products that people have created and the reaction of the Sharks to those people’s product and business.

I recently had a chance to do the following interview with Taylor Gwiazdon from Liddup who was on the April 5th episode of Shark Tank. He provides some really great insights into the show and their experience on the show. Plus, we find out what’s happening with Liddup since the show. Enjoy!

What’s Liddup?

We have taken the common ice chest/cooler and incorporated interior lighting, just like your refrigerator: you open the lid and the lights come on.  The cooler industry has been stagnant for years and being able to find what you are looking for just makes sense to us.  The LEDs inside the LiddUp Cooler give you ample lighting to find your favorite item.

Tell us about your experience getting on Shark Tank.

Our experience on Shark Tank was incredible.  It was definitely one of the most exciting moments for LiddUp.  The national exposure was great for our product, millions of people saw the cooler on the show and we enjoyed every minute of the taping.  It allowed us to finally showcase our product to the public.  I don’t think being from Las Vegas had any sort of impact on our approval.

How many times did you have to pitch to be on the show?  How much do the producers work with you on your pitch?

We practiced our pitch and rebuttal questions for months making sure we were on point with every detail of our company and could properly handle any question while on set.  At the time of taping we were a pre-revenue start-up company so we had to appropriately justify the valuation of our company.  We wrote our pitch and the producers were helpful in structuring it.

We had a slightly more fortunate approval process than most.  We were introduced to one of the producers of the show who loved our product and thought we would be a great fit for Shark Tank.  We went through the application process, paper work and audition video, and he was able to drop it right on one of the executive producer’s desk to see if they would like.  They loved us!

What was it like being on Shark Tank?  Is it as stressful as it looks?

Being on the show was a surreal moment.  It was intense standing in front of five prominent venture capitalists and pitching our product for the first time.  The great thing about the show is that it’s all business and the dialogue is non-scripted.  What you see is what you get.  The experience overall was exciting and intense, a moment we will never forget.  It was definitely stressful but we were so well prepared that they really couldn’t knock us back with an out of left field question.

What were you thinking when Robert dropped out on you?

We were a little surprised because he was upset that we wanted to discuss it.  I understand his point but he also needs to understand our decision to think it through.  He may have been making an investment in us but we would be making an equal investment in him as well, trusting his connections and work ethic to help LiddUp get off the ground.  We felt we had the right to chat about it for a second but he wanted none of that.  It’s all good though, he is a successful businessman for a reason.  It was cool having him interested in LiddUp!

What’s been happening with Liddup since Shark Tank?

We explored licensing the technology to major cooler manufacturers.  The feedback we have received is that they do not have the manufacturing capacity to start a new product line on a novel idea.   Most have asked us to manufacture the cooler and then we can discuss licensing.  This is our current mission and we are ready to pull the trigger on buying our first cooler molds as soon as our Kickstarter Campaign completes on June 3.

Any suggestions for entrepreneurs looking to go on Shark Tank?

Make sure you know your business inside and out.  Know your sales, revenues, profits, valuation, etc.  This will make sure you look prepared and know your facts so when people ask your business related questions you can answer properly.  Also, know your direction – where you want to go, what your vision is, what is the growth potential.  Make sure your responses are accurate and realistic.  You have to keep in mind that the person in front of you may not be as passionate as you are about your product or business.

If you’re interested in Liddup’s product, you can go and pre-order their lighted cooler on kickstarter.

The Voice 2012 Returns Monday

The Voice is returning to NBC on Monday. Unlike the rest of the vocal reality TV shows, the judges are still the same. Plus, the Voice has added a great new twist this season to make the Battle Round more interesting. Basically, once the coach chooses who they’re going to keep in the battle rounds, then the other coach can steal the singer who lost the battle round. Should make it interesting.

Stars Earn Stripes on NBC

If you’re like me and have been glued to the TV watching the Olympics, you’ve probably seen all the commercials for Stars Earn Stripes. I’m still a little torn on whether it will make for a great TV show or not. I think I’d love to have the experience myself, but I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy watching other stars go through it.

Although, I do love watching prima donna’s get hammered. Reminds me of a story I once heard about Tom Cruise from one of the real fighter pilots. At the filming of Top Gun, Tom Cruise came up to the fighter pilot and said, “Would you like my autograph?” He replied to Tom Cruise, “Sorry I don’t take autographs from sissies.”

We’ll see how this new show goes. I don’t think any of the cast look like major prima donna’s, but we’ll see. I also love learning more about the military.

Here are some of the preview videos for Stars Earn Stripes. Read more..

London Olympics 2012: The NBA at the Olympics

If you’re a basketball fan like me then you were probably keeping up with the roster of the United States Mens Basketball Team that are playing in London for the 2012 Olympics right now.

In case you happen to be hiding under a rock somewhere… here is the current roster as well as which NBA Team they are from:

PLAYERS NAME NBA TEAM POSITION
TYSON CHANDLER New York Knicks Center
KEVIN DURANT Oklahoma City Thunder Forward
LEBRON JAMES Miami Heat Forward
RUSSELL WESTBROOK Oklahoma City Thunder Guard
DERON WILLIAMS Brooklyn Nets Point Guard
ANDRE IGUODALA Philadelphia 76ers Guard / Forward
KOBE BRYANT Los Angeles Lakers Shooting Guard
KEVIN LOVE Minnesota Timberwolves Forward / Center
JAMES HARDEN Oklahoma City Thunder Shooting Guard
CHRIS PAUL Los Angeles Clippers Point Guard
ANTHONY DAVIS New Orleans Hornets Forward / Center
CARMELO ANTHONY New York Knicks Forward

What people may or may not realize is that there is a significant number of NBA players that are also playing basketball in the Olympics but for other countries.

As of August 3rd the following teams are definitely qualified for the Quarterfinals:
– United States
– Russia
– Spain

As we know more of whom would be participating in the Quarterfinals this post will be updated accordingly.

Below is the list of those players as well as which NBA team they are from and which country they are playing for. Also included in the below list are those players that have been recently signed by various teams throughout the NBA over the summer of 2012.

Since the Mens Basketball Olympic Competition is still in the preliminary rounds til August 6th, we won’t know who of the below players we will have the pleasure of seeing play in the Top 8.

London Olympics 2012: Michael Phelps a Look Back

Several weeks ago on my personal blog, I broke down the times in every individual event that Michael Phelps has participated in each of the Olympics that he has been a part of… now that he is getting close to completing his time in London, here is an update of the table from my original post:

YEAR PRELIM SEMIS FINALS PLACING
MENS 200 METER FREESTYLE
2004 Athens 1:48.43 (Q) 1:47.08 (Q) 1:45.32 Bronze
2008 Beijing 1:46.48 (Q) 1:46.28 (Q) 1:42.96 Gold
MENS 100 METER BUTTERFLY
2004 Athens 52.35 (Q) 51.61 (Q) 51.25 Gold
2008 Beijing 50.87 (Q) 50.97 (Q) 50.58 Gold
2012 London 51.72 (Q) 50.86 (Q) 51.21 Gold
MENS 200 METER BUTTERFLY
2000 Sydney 1:57.30 (Q) 1:57.00 (Q) 1:56.50 5th
2004 Athens 1:57.36 (Q) 1:55.65 (Q) 1:54.04 Gold
2008 Beijing 1:53.70 (Q) 1:53.70 (Q) 1:52.03 Gold
2012 London 1:55.53 (Q) 1:54.53 (Q) 1:53.01 Silver
MENS 200 METER INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
2004 Athens 1:57.14 (Q) 1:58.52 (Q) 2:00.01 Gold
2008 Beijing 1:58.65 (Q) 1:57.70 (Q) 1:54.23 Gold
2012 London 1:58.24 (Q) 1:57.11 (Q) 1:54.27 Gold
MENS 400 METER INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
2004 Athens 4:13.29 (Q) 4:08.26 Gold
2008 Beijing 4:07.82 (Q) 4:03.84 Gold
2012 London 4:13.33 (Q) 4:09.28 4th

A quick glance at the times above throughout the Olympics that Michael has participated in thus far it would appear that although his lowest times were in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, for the most part he has been consistent thereafter.

As of this writing he has the following individual medals:
Gold: 10
Silver: 1
Bronze: 1

Keep in mind that I did not count any medals he has earned with others in the various relay events, although he has earned quite a few in those individual events as well.

Twice he has won a particular event in three consecutive Olympics… now the question remains: Will he come back for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Give it a few years and we’ll know our answer.

Stars Earn Stripes: NEW Celebrity Reality Show on NBC

While watching the Olympics, they were advertising a new reality competition show for celebrities: Stars Earn Stripes. According to the official NBC website:

Hosted by General Wesley Clark (retired) and Samantha Harris, “Stars Earn Stripes” is an action-packed competition show that pays homage to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and our first-responder services. The star-studded cast includes four-time undefeated world boxing champion Laila Ali, actor Dean Cain (“Out of Time,” Five Days of War”), actor and former National Football League player Terry Crews (“The Expendables 2,” “The Newsroom”), multi-platinum recording artist, actor, producer and television personality Nick Lachey (NBC’s “The Sing-Off”), Alaska businessman and four-time Iron Dog snowmobile race champion Todd Palin, NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” trainer Dolvett Quince, Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, and WWE diva, Eve Torres.

In this fast-paced competition, the eight celebrities will gather at a remote training facility where they will be challenged to execute complicated missions inspired by real military exercises. From helicopter drops into water to long-range weapons fire, the contestants will be tested physically, mentally and emotionally. Each will be paired with a special operative from a military branch or one of our first-responder forces, including former U.S. Army Delta Force and Green Berets, U.S. Navy SEALS, U.S. Marines and police officers, who train alongside their partners and compete in the missions with them. Each of the teams is competing for a cash prize on behalf of a military, veterans or first-responder charity.

Committed to hiring recent vets on the crew, “Stars Earn Stripes” hopes to inspire other employers throughout the country to make similar commitments to our returning heroes to show audiences just how incredible these heroes’ missions really are. Dick Wolf (“Law & Order,” NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU”), Mark Burnett (NBC’s “The Voice,” “Survivor”) and David A. Hurwitz (“Fear Factor”) serve as executive producers. The series is a production of Universal Television, One Three Media, Wolf Reality, LLC and Bill’s Market & Television Productions.

What I find to be rather interesting is that there are two Dancing with the Stars veterans and one other whose brother will be on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars: Samantha Harris (ex-host), Laila Ali (Season 3 contestant), Nick Lachey (Season 2’s Drew Lachey’s brother). Or they were or are involved with other NBC competition shows: Dolvett Quince (trainer of The Biggest Loser) and Nick Lachey (ex-host of Sing-off).

It would also appear that the contestants involved are those known to work out heavily and / or have partaken in sports in general. I am intrigued enough to give the premiere a courtesy look if I have time… but beyond that we’ll see.
