NBC’s The Voice Season 5 – Blind Auditions: Premiere

So Marianya here… Below are my impressions of the contestants that have been picked up by various coaches as well as my thoughts on the coach / contestant connection.

Unfortunately since I am already busy on Monday nights, my thoughts / impressions will not be posted until the day after. So bare with me. 🙂

“I’ve Got the Music in Me”
by The Kiki Dee Band

Contestant Impressions: She has that strong raspy voice that would work well with the rock genre. And in some ways stronger than Juliet Simms from Season 2.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Since there is no strong rock-related coaches in the chairs that turned she really could learn anything from the three. Choosing Cee Lo was a wise, but not surprising move, however, I would like to see her go with Blake.

Contestant Impressions: Younger contestants don’t really impress me as much as some of the older ones. Yes there are many that have a lot of natural talent and impeccable tone quality, however, to me give any of them a couple more years and they would be even better. I feel the same way about Caroline.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Blake has the stronger track record when it comes to coaching the youth, but Cee Lo is a respectable choice. At the same time, I think Cee Lo will push her in ways that Blake might not be able too. So despite my reluctance, Cee Lo was probably the more appropriate choice.

“You Are So Beautiful”
made popular by Joe Cocker

Contestant Impressions: Mature, strong, power voice… and moving. The problem is that as much as I respect her voice and am glad she is part of the competition now I am not convinced of her longetivity.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Between Adam and Christina, the latter would have been too similar while Adam would actually push her in ways that Christina might not be able to. AKA good choice.

October 1, 2013 I Written By

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does blogging fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =) Though you may find me at either PureDWTS, PureSYTYCD or PureAmericasGotTalent at this point.

“Use Me” composed and originally recorded by Bill Withers

Contestant Impressions: This is a strong bluesy kind of performance that I haven’t really heard all that often. Only thing wrong… there wasn’t enough of it.
Contestant / Coach Combo: He really could have gone either way when it came to his coach. I think Blake it a better fit, but CeeLo would have been interesting.

“Landslide” is a song written by Stevie Nicks and performed by British-American music group Fleetwood Mac

Contestant Impressions: As much as I like her voice and the tone, etc… This isn’t someone that I generally remember, meaning I have to rewatch her performance to remember what I was thinking about her. It will be interesting to see what she sings down the road.
Contestant / Coach Combo: The obvious choice here is Christina, and honestly as much as Blake would have worked… Christina just works better.

“Mercy” performed by Duffy

Contestant Impressions: For someone so young, she really knocked this out of the park. There is something I like about her voice, except there are similarities to current / past artists so she doesn’t really stand out that much.
Contestant / Coach Combo: This is a combo in heavy (well considering the choices). Christina could work, but CeeLo is just that much better at the moment.

“Sure Be Cool If You Did” recorded by Blake Shelton

Contestant Impressions: Seriously? A Blake Shelton song? There is something about his I like, don’t know what though. He has a bit of a grit and a growl that he plays with.
Contestant / Coach Combo: I am really happy with this combo, Adam will do really well with Justin. Particularly since Adam has always wanted to work with a country artist.

“Girl on Fire” recorded by Alicia Keys

Contestant Impressions: For someone so young she has a lot of power in her voice. What I would love to hear is more depth to it, though she is strong in the technicalities.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Christina and Timyra-Joi are far too similar in vocal styles that I am not sure if it is a good fit. However, considering her youth this is probably the best choice since it would allow Christina to help her develop into a more mature voice as opposed to the other coaches where the differing styles could have a negative impact on her vocally.

“The Thrill Is Gone” is a major hit for B.B. King

Contestant Impressions: I really love her deeper, lower range, not to mention her falsetto. OMG. And most people that sing the lower range have to work for it, but she didn’t have to, it was just there.
Contestant / Coach Combo: That being said, she really couldn’t go wrong with any of the three coaches, well more either Adam or Blake over CeeLo but not by much. This will be interesting to see it develops.

“Yoü and I” by Lady Gaga

Contestant Impressions: She sounded just a little off towards the beginning then when she got into the pocket it just got better over time.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Honestly Christina would work better than CeeLo in this pairing. She could really focus on harnessing the power and taking it to the next level.

“Treasure” is a song by Bruno Mars

Contestant Impressions: Upbeat… he sounded like he was having a ball on stage. However, for some reason he became forgettable over time for me.
Contestant / Coach Combo: This is a combo that could work. Granted considering that CeeLo was the only one that turned, what other choices were there?

“Electric Feel” is the second single from MGMT

Contestant Impressions: This is what I was waiting for all night! Something unique, smooth, and that caught my attention and kept it.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Adam is the perfect coach for him, CeeLo is unique but I don’t think he could really do for him that Adam could do for him. Blake could push him, but I don’t think he could push him the way that Adam would. Overall, it is all about Adam here.

“Not Over You” by Gavin DeGraw

Contestant Impressions: Charisma, power, poise. His tone is really strong as well as his diction. Very strong vocally.
Contestant / Coach Combo: That being said Adam I think was the safest choice. Not one I would have liked to have seen but it would be interesting to see what happens here.

“Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” by KT Tunstall

Contestant Impressions: There is a lot of attitude and power in he voice. She really knows how to use her voice to her advantage.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Thus a combo with Christina works well. CeeLo could work too but I thinK Christina would be able to help let it flourish even more.

“It’s a Beautiful Day” is a song by Michael Bublé

Contestant Impressions: You can really feel this guy just grooving with the music. He felt really comfortable and in the pocket throughout the song. He definitely has the style and feel of Michael Buble, however, his voice is deeper and in a lower register (which I prefer).
Contestant / Coach Combo: Honestly with Blake being friends with Michael Buble is a huge advantage because Sam is not only going to get pushed and stretched by Blake, but it is with the knowledge and stylizations that Buble could aid Blake with. Sam wins in this match up.

“Losing My Religion” by R.E.M.

Contestant Impressions: Holy crap, I got chills listening to this guy sing. He was able to go through the spectrum from the subtle and vulnerable to the powerful whilst still being vulnerable.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Him and Adam pairing up is probably a very good choice. Adam works well with some flexibility plus he has the advantage of remembering James from last season… so really between Blake and Adam… Adam is probably preferred as his coach.

“Two Black Cadillacs” released by Carrie Underwood

Contestant Impressions: Not bad, strong but there is something that needs work.
Contestant / Coach Combo: It was kind of funny when CeeLo mentioned he would never consider a country singer and he still pushed his button for a country singer. A CeeLo / country singer pairing could have fascinating results… but Christina is ultimately the better choice

“Hall of Fame” is a song by The Script

Contestant Impressions: I really like what he brought to the song, there was something raw and inspiring about his voice that really draws you in.
Contestant / Coach Combo: Between the two coaches CeeLo would help him take his voice to the next level whileas Christina’s similarities in vocal technique might stunt him in his growth.

“She’s Country” is a song written by Danny Myrick and Bridgette Tatum, and recorded by Jason Aldean

Contestant Impressions: He is definitely down to earth country. Not the kind of country that has the flexibility to move to other genres, but just sure fire country.
Contestant / Coach Combo: However, Blake is the easy choice… if another coach had turned their chair around I would love to have seen another pairing sans Blake.

“Diamonds” is a song recorded by Rihanna

Contestant Impressions: Wow, this one can sing. I love the power and subtlety in her vocals and what she brings to the table. This is someone I am looking forward to down the road.
Contestant / Coach Combo: What is it with Adam winning these four chair turns this night? I mean seriously. Then again, this has a feeling of chocolate and vanilla which can be good or bad. What I mean is that their styles don’t mesh on paper but they work well together. So I am expecting good things to happen here.
